Herbal superpower for PMS

Chaste tree (Vitex agnus-castus) is well established in modern herbal medicine, combining centuries of traditional knowledge with the latest scientific findings. Extracts derived from the dried fruits of this medicinal plant are used in pharmaceutical formulations. These are used to treat premenstrual syndrome (PMS) and have traditionally also been applied for menstrual cycle disorders.
Medicinal products containing chaste tree berry extracts can effectively relieve symptoms of PMS – if the dosage is correct.1,2
A study demonstrated that: A daily dosage of 20 mg of chaste tree berry dry extract can effectively treat PMS.2
Lower doses, such as 4 mg daily, can alleviate symptoms but are insufficient for the treatment of PMS.3,4
In addition to herbal medicines, there are also various dietary supplements with chaste tree. Most of these products do not contain the standardised extracts but only dried chaste tree berries in small quantities. Their effectiveness in treating PMS has not been demonstrated or investigated.
Chaste tree can help lower prolactin levels and balance hormone levels3. This may positively influence both physical symptoms and mental well-being. In addition, chaste tree has antispasmodic, analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties and is considered very well tolerated.
